A fire at a power sub-station in Mandola, Uttar Pradesh caused a major power outage in many parts of Delhi on June 11, Delhi Power Minister Atishi said.

According to officials, the power cut was due to a snag in the grid stations of Delhi Transco Ltd due to high power demand and excessive heat.

Several parts of the national capital were hit by power cuts amid severe heatwave on Tuesday.

Delhi minister Atishi took to social platform X, saying, “There is power outage in many parts of Delhi from 2:11 pm.

This is due to a fire at sub-station of Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (PGCIL) in Mandola, UP.

Delhi receives 1200 MW of power from the Mandola sub-station, and therefore many parts of Delhi have been affected.

The power restoration process has begun and electricity is now gradually returning to different areas. “minister of the central government Manohar Lal Khattar, the chairman of PGCIL and the chairman of NTPC… There is very limited electricity production in Delhi, most of the electricity in Delhi comes from different states… It is a matter of great concern that today the national level power infrastructure of our country has failed,” she said in a briefing Water crisis update: L-G V K Saxena on Tuesday said that he spoke to Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, with the latter informing him that Delhi was getting its allocated share of water from the neigh bouring state.

However, AAP minister Atishi countered Saxena’s claim, saying that the supply from the Munak Canal had decreased.

“Delhi is getting only 958 MGD on a daily basis at present… And it needs 45 MGD more on a daily basis,” the Delhi water minister said.

“As per their report–May 7 to May 10, they released 675 cusec water instead of 719 cusec.

At DLC they were supposed to release 375 cusec but they release only 330 cusec water,” Atishi said, while citing a report submitted by the Haryana government to the Supreme Court.

In other news, in a development that promises to ease commuting woes for many, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) announced the likely opening of a new 2.5-km section on the Magenta Line by July or August this year.

This section, part of the Phase IV extension, will become operational after receiving the necessary approval from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS).
