NO NON-VEG FOOD: A private school in Noida sent a message to parents asking them not to pack any non-vegetarian food for their children’s lunch. The message that was sent to parents said- When non-vegetarian food is cooked in the morning for lunch, there is a possibility of it getting spoiled. It can be harmful to health.
The school has ruled out two major reasons for the request in the circular. “Health and Safety: Non-vegetarian food, when cooked in the morning for lunchtime consumption, can pose serious health risks if not stored and handled properly, and we prioritize our students’ well-being,” it read.
“Inclusivity and Respect: Our school values diversity and promotes a culture of inclusivity. By maintaining a vegetarian food environment, we ensure that all students feel respected and comfortable, regardless of their dietary preferences or restrictions, while eating their meals together,” it added.

According to Supriti Chauhan, Principal of Delhi Public School in Noida’s Sector 132, the school urged parents to refrain from sending non-vegetarian items, for they “get spoiled quickly due to hot and humid weather conditions.” She also added that it was merely a request and a suggestion. The principal also clarified that the circular was not a mandate and that it would aim to provide a diverse environment and would teach students the value of sharing. She further urged that similar requests are issued annually so it is not some new rule that has been introduced by the school.
Chauhan also cleared the air by stating, “We have written to the parents requesting that students refrain from bringing non-vegetarian food items to school. This is not a diktat, but only a request. We issue such a circular every year, and this year’s is nothing new. There is no ban, no directive, no advisory, only a respectful request.”

Some parents have also supported the school’s step, while others viewed it as an attempt to control and restrict the food choices of children. Many parents have also raised questions and have asked for the logic behind the health risks associated with non-vegetarian items and the connection between respect and food choices.
