The Unique Identification Authority of India which is also known as UIDAI has come out with a version of the Aadhaar app also called mAadhaar or the new Aadhaar app. This new app has some changes that help keep your information private. It also has some features that make it easier for you to update your information.

You can now update your number and address right from the app, which is a big change, from how it used to be.

If you do not see this feature away you should update the Aadhaar app from the Play Store or the App Store and then check again.

Before this update the online services of UIDAI and the Self Service Update Portal or SSUP for short let people update their address online by uploading a proof of address document. However to change a number people usually had to go to an Aadhaar Seva Kendra or an enrolment centre in person. The official website of UIDAI still has information, about how to update addresses using SSUP. It says that mobile number updates typically happen at these centres. So for now we can expect that people will be able to update their address online using SSUP and update their number at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra or enrolment centre and both ways will be available while the new system is being rolled out and becomes more stable. UIDAI and SSUP will likely take some time to settle into the system.

So what is the best way to do this? Use the app if you can. It is the way. If the options are available on your device the new app will give you the experience.. What if the options are not there? In that case you should use SSUP for your address. Go to the Aadhaar centre to update your mobile number. You can also check the app or the tutorial on UIDAI to see how the new mobile update feature works. The new app and these other options will help you get everything updated. Use the app for the smoothest experience and use SSUP and the Aadhaar centre, for other things.

Before you get started it is an idea to go through this checklist. The checklist is important to make sure everything is ready. You will want to use the checklist to prepare for what’s coming next. The checklist is, like a list of things to do before you begin.

* Check one thing at a time

* Make sure you have everything you need

* Go through the checklist carefully

The checklist will help you to be prepared and ready to go. You should use the checklist every time you start something. The checklist is very helpful.

Updated app: Install / update the official Aadhaar app (mAadhaar / the new Aadhaar app) from Google Play or Apple App Store.

You need to have your Aadhaar number and biometrics ready. Keep your 12-digit Aadhaar number you can use the regular one or the masked version. For a lot of things you will get a code on your phone this code will be sent to the phone number that you have already registered with them. So if you cannot use your phone number you might have to go to a centre to change your phone number in the system. The new app is trying to make this easier. You should still be prepared for this. You will need your Aadhaar number, for this.

Documents for address change: A clear scanned/photographed copy of an accepted Proof of Address (POA) document in your name — e.g., passport, bank statement/passbook, voter ID, ration card, driver’s license, recent utility bill (not older than 3 months) etc. Use UIDAI’s official list to confirm acceptability.

When you upload documents from the app or SSUP you need to have an internet connection. The photos of your documents should be clear. They must be easy to read and in color. Also the size and type of the photos should be what is allowed. This is important because the image must be legible in color and within the allowed size and type, for the app or SSUP.

Payment method if you need to make a payment: When you update your address online it is usually free if you do it during a campaign. At times you might have to pay a small fee if you go to a centre to do it. You should check the fees, on the UIDAI website. If you update your address using the SSUP method it is usually free unless they say you have to pay.

Part A — How to change your address online (preferred: Self Service Update Portal or new app)

Option 1 — Using the new Aadhaar app (if “Update Address” available)

To start you need to open the version of the Aadhaar app on your phone. Make sure you have the app, the one that was made by UIDAI.

To get started you need to sign in or open the profile section, in the app. The app might ask you to create or verify your mAadhaar profile.

You need to find “Update Aadhaar” or “Update Address” or “Update Demographics” in the menu. The names might be a little different in the app. You can follow the UIDAI tutorial and the hints, in the app to help you.

To make a change you need to select Address as the field you want to update. Now you have to enter your address and you should enter it exactly the way you want it to appear on your Aadhaar card. Make sure to spell everything and include the locality and pincode.

You need to upload a copy of a document that proves your address. This document has to be one that is accepted by the UIDAI. You can. Scan the document or take a photo of it. Just make sure that the image is clear and easy to read and that it shows the document.

Submit the request. The app is going to create a number called a URN, which is short, for Update Request Number so make sure you write it down.

The app might also show you the steps it will take to process your request and even let you choose a BPO or agency to look over your request, which’s the Update Request and the BPO or agency will review it.

You can check the status of your application using the URN in the app or on the SSUP/ website. When your application is validated by the UIDAI the UIDAI will update your address. After the UIDAI updates your address you can download a version of your e-Aadhaar, from the UIDAI website.

Option 2 — Using SSUP (Self Service Update Portal) on UIDAI website

Go to UIDAI’s Update Address in your Aadhaar / SSUP page. (Search “Update Address Aadhaar SSUP” or use uidai.gov.in → My Aadhaar → Update Aadhaar).

To start you need to log in with your Aadhaar number and the OTP that was sent to your phone. This is the phone that you have registered already. If you do not have access to this phone then the Self Service Update Portal or SSUP, for short may stop you from going forward. In this situation you can go to a centre to get help. Alternatively you can check the application to see if it has a different way of doing things. You can use the app to find another way to log in with your Aadhaar number.

Choose Address Update, fill in the new address details, and upload the scanned POA.

You need to submit the form and make a note of the URN. Then you can track the status of your request on the UIDAI website. After they verify everything the address, in your Aadhaar will be updated.

When you need to show where you live there are some documents that people usually accept as proof. These are things like utility bills or bank statements that have your name and address on them.

Some common examples of these documents are:

* Utility bills

* Bank statements

* Letters, from the government

These are the kinds of things that can be used as Proof of Address. Proof of Address is really important when you are filling out forms or applying for things. You will often need to give someone a document that shows where you live and this is where Proof of Address comes in.

Passport, Bank statement/passbook, Post office account passbook.

Voter ID, Ration card, Driving license.

Utility bills: electricity, water, gas, landline/telephone (usually not older than 3 months).

Government allotment/possession letters, property tax receipt (recent), insurance policies, etc.

(Refer to UIDAI’s official document list for the full, authoritative list.)

Processing time & fees

When you submit your address update the Unique Identification Authority of India usually takes a days to check and process it. The time it takes can be different for each person. You can use the Update Request Number to track the status of your address update, with the Unique Identification Authority of India.

Fees for updating your address through the Self Service Update Portal are usually free. The Unique Identification Authority of India has had times when they do not charge for updates. However if you go to a centre to update your address you may have to pay a fee for the service. It is an idea to check the current fees on the Unique Identification Authority of India website before you visit a centre. This way you will know how much you have to pay. The Unique Identification Authority of India website has all the information you need about the fees, for updating your address.

Part B — How to change your mobile number (new app + fallback routes)

So you need to know how to update your number. Historically people had to go to an Aadhaar enrolment or update centre to do this. The reason for this was to make sure everything was verified and to stop people from misusing the system. Now there is an Aadhaar app that came out in January 2026. This app is supposed to let you update your number right in the app. If you have this feature on your Aadhaar app you can just follow the steps, in the app.. If you do not see this feature you will have to go to an Aadhaar Seva Kendra or an enrolment centre to update your mobile number on your Aadhaar.

Option 1 — Using the new Aadhaar app (if “Update Mobile Number” available)

Open the updated Aadhaar app and go to Profile / Update Aadhaar. Look for “Update Mobile Number”, “Add/Update Mobile”, or similar.

The app will ask you to confirm your identity using your existing Aadhaar profile. This can be done with verification or other methods that are available in the app. If the app still needs to send a verification code to the number that is already registered and you do not have access, to that number the app may give you another way to verify your identity or it may tell you to go to a centre. The app may work a little differently when it is first being introduced.

Enter the mobile number that you want to register for the mobile service. The system will probably send an OTP to the mobile number. You will have to enter this OTP.

The system may also ask you to enter an OTP that was sent to your mobile number or it may ask for biometric confirmation.

You have to complete all the verification steps that the system asks for, which includes the mobile number verification. Complete all the requested verifications, for the mobile number.

When you submit you should get a URN or a confirmation message in the app. You can track the status of your submission, in the app. You can also check it on the UIDAI website if you need to.

Note: The mobile number is a sensitive piece of information because it is used for security codes and authentication. So the Unique Identification Authority of India may need to take steps to verify mobile numbers like using fingerprints or meeting in person when this new system starts. For the few months after this new system is introduced you can expect that there will be more checks. If you are not able to complete the process on the app because you do not have access, to your mobile number you should go to the centre instead.

If the app does not support updates for you then you should visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra or an Enrolment Centre. You can go to the Aadhaar Seva Kendra or the Enrolment Centre to get help, with your Aadhaar updates.

Locate centre: Find the nearest Aadhaar Seva Kendra / enrolment centre via UIDAI locator (Bhuvan Aadhaar Portal / UIDAI website).

Book appointment (recommended) or walk-in. Bring original Aadhaar and an ID with recent photo (as per UIDAI checklist).

To update your Mobile Number go to the centre. Ask for the Mobile Number Update. The person helping you will check who you are and they might use biometrics to do this. You will then need to give them your Mobile Number and do the OTP verification right there. If you have to pay a fee you will need to do that too for the Mobile Number Update.

To get the acknowledgement and track the status you need to go to the UIDAI website. Once they have processed your request your new mobile number will be linked to your account, on UIDAI.

To check the status of your e-Aadhaar you need to follow some steps. First you have to go to the website of the Unique Identification Authority of India.

* You will see a tab that says download e-Aadhaar.

You have to click on this tab to proceed.

1. Then you will be asked to enter your Aadhaar number or the enrollment id.

2. After that you have to enter the security code that you see on the screen.

Now you have to click on the option that says check status of e-Aadhaar to know the status of your e-Aadhaar.

If your e-Aadhaar is ready you will see an option to download the updated e-Aadhaar.

You can download the updated e-Aadhaar by clicking on this option and entering the password.

The password to open the downloaded eAadhaar file is the first four letters of your name and your year of birth.

You can open the file by entering this password and view your updated e-Aadhaar.

You can use the Update Request Number on the Check Aadhaar Update Status page of UIDAI to see how your update is going. When the Update Request Number shows that the update is complete you can get the e-Aadhaar PDF, from UIDAI or look at it in the app.

Common problems & quick fixes

You should try the new Aadhaar app first because the Aadhaar app may provide you with ways to verify your identity. If the Aadhaar app does not work for you then you should go to an Aadhaar Seva Kendra with your identification and biometrics, for the Aadhaar verification.

The app does not show me any options to update it. I am looking for the update options, in the app. I do not see them. The app needs to be updated. I want to know where the update options are.

You need to make sure the app is the one from UIDAI and that you have the latest version from the Play Store or the App Store. Take a look at what UIDAI has announced and read the apps release notes. If you still cannot find what you are looking for you can use the address or go to a centre, with your mobile.

They did not accept the upload, for the address.

You need to check the document type against the list from UIDAI. Make sure the image is clear and in color. It is also in pdf format. The name on the document should match the name on your Aadhaar. Some documents are only okay if they are not too old like utility bills which should be, from the three months. If your document does not meet these rules you need to scan it and send it in again. Aadhaar documents have to be just right double check everything before you resubmit.

Processing taking long:

Track by URN. If unusually delayed (several weeks), contact UIDAI help (toll-free 1947 / help@uidai.gov.in

) or visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra.

Privacy & security: what to watch for

When you want to get the app you should only get it from Google Play or the App Store. Make sure you check who made the app it should say UIDAI. Also read what other people think of it. Do not get any apps that say they are, for Aadhaar only get the official UIDAI app.

You should never share your One Time Passwords or biometrics with anyone publicly. The Unique Identification Authority of India will never ask you for One Time Passwords over calls or emails that you did not ask for. If someone asks you for your One Time Password or biometric information outside of the ways you should think of it as a scam.

The new app has a lock. This biometric lock is a thing. It helps to keep your information safe. You should look at the privacy controls like the lock to make sure your biometric usage is secure. The biometric lock is a part of keeping your biometric usage safe.

When you are using the SSUP you need to make sure the website domain is correct. The website domain should be uidai.gov.in. Do not go to any website that looks like uidai.gov.in.
