Centre announces formulation of special committee to oversee Indo-Bangladesh issue

 special committee: On August 09, 2024, Friday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah informed the Parliament that the Central government has established a high-level committee to oversee the situation along the Indo-Bangladesh Border (IBB) with respect to the ongoing unrest in the neighboring country, Bangladesh.

Amid the protests and riots in Bangladesh, Indians residing there seem to be facing quite a hard time. People are destroying temples, killing Indians and mercilessly torturing our natives in the neighbouring country. With the unrest, protests, a large number of Indian students have already returned to India to ensure their safety. While the situation seems volatile , many Indian residents of Bangladesh have chosen to deliberately stay back. The government is further keeping a regular check on the situation and has made arrangements to support the Indian citizens. Indian visa centers in Bangladesh have also been temporarily closed due to unrest.

The committee, which will be formed by the Central Government, will be led by the Additional Director General (ADG) of the Border Security Force (BSF) for the Eastern Command. He said that the panel will overlook the maintenance of open lines of communication with Bangladeshi authorities and ensure the safety of Indian nationals, including Hindus and other minority communities residing in the country. In the heat of the current scenario in Bangladesh, the Modi government has decided to formulate a committee to monitor the current situation on the Indo-Bangladesh Border (IBB). The committee will also be maintaining communication channels with their counterpart authorities in Bangladesh to ensure coordination and constant check on the condition of the Indians who are still living in Bangladesh.

An interim government has been formed under the leadership of Nobel Laureate Mohammad Yunus was sworn in on August 08, 2024, Thursday, in Bangladesh after Sheikh Hasina resigned and decided to seek refuge in other countries after growing unrest demanding her immediate resignation.

Wishing Mr. Yunus, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had urged him to ensure “safety and protection” of the minority communities in Bangladesh. The Ministry of External Affairs, S Jaishankar, on August 09, 2024, Thursday, informed that officials are in touch with the post-Hasina administration to ensure safety for remaining officials in its missions and citizens who are scattered across Bangladesh.
