‘Mardaani 3’ movie review: A Rani Mukerji project that loses steam after half-time
The Mardaani movies have always been different from Hindi films. They are tough have women characters and deal with real social issues. Rani Mukerji is always great in these movies. When the first Mardaani came out in 2014 people liked it because it was a film that showed real life. It did not have clothes or fake stories. The second Mardaani movie came out in 2019. It was even more intense. It made Shivani Shivaji Roy a famous cop character, in Bollywood. So when Mardaani 3 was coming out people were really looking forward to it. The Mardaani franchise was supposed to be really good. People were expecting an exciting story, a really bad guy and a Shivani who had changed a lot. The audiences wanted to see a Shivani who was different from before. They thought the villain should be very mean and scary. The story should be full of surprises. Twists to keep the audiences interested, in Shivani.
The movie starts out well and the first half is very exciting.. After a while it starts to lose steam. What starts as a good thriller turns into a familiar chase scene. The movie loses the depth and the strong story that made the other movies in the series so good. The film is like the movies, at first but then it becomes too predictable.
A Promising Beginning
Mardaani 3 starts with a scary idea. The movie does not waste any time setting up the importance of the situation. It throws the viewers into a disturbing crime that upsets the whole city and needs the police to act right away. The beginning of the movie is fast. It is very unsettling. The people who made Mardaani 3 the director and the writers they clearly know what makes Mardaani 3 good: it is because Mardaani 3 is realistic and it is urgent. Mardaani 3 is a movie that knows how to make the audience feel like something bad is happening. It needs to be fixed now.
Rani Mukerjis Shivani is back. She is just as fierce as she was before. She does not do drama or overact she is very careful and watches everything. She just keeps going. When Rani Mukerjis Shivani is on the screen the movie feels real. The parts where they are trying to figure out what happened are very tense. The movie feels like a game, between good and bad and it is not easy to say who is who. Rani Mukerjis Shivani makes the movie feel serious.
The way the movie looks in the half is really good at making you feel tense. The rooms where they question people are not well lit the streets are wet from rain. The city feels crowded. This makes you feel like you cannot breathe. The way the movie is put together is good it does not stay on one thing for long. Every part of the movie feels like it is there for a reason. The story touches on some issues. Like how the system can be corrupt how women can be treated badly and how institutions can fail. This makes you think that the movie wants to be more than a movie that thrills you. The cinematography, in the movie really supports this feeling of tension. The cinematography is beautiful. It helps to make the movie feel more real.
For an hour Mardaani 3 feels like it is a good follow up to the other Mardaani movies it really feels like a worthy successor, to the Mardaani series.
Rani Mukerji: The Anchor of the Film
People who do not like the movie still think that Rani Mukerji is really good in it. Rani Mukerji does a job and everyone knows that. Even the people who find problems, with the film think that Rani Mukerji is exceptional.
Shivani is played by her with a lot of confidence. It does not feel like she is acting all. Shivani is a character that she seems to know well. The way she moves her body says a lot, about Shivani. She is calm. You can tell that Shivani is also very strong. She does not need to yell to show that Shivani is strong. Shivani is strong. That is just how she is.
The movie is really good at showing Shivani as a person, not a superhero. Shivani is very upset, by the things that happen in the crimes she looks into. She gets really angry. It feels real not like she is just acting. When things are calm the actress playing Shivani, Mukerji shows that Shivani can be hurt and vulnerable too. This reminds us that Shivani is a person who has to deal with things every day and it affects her deeply. The movie shows that even though Shivani wears a police uniform she is still someone who feels things strongly.
The movie starts out okay. As it goes on the story does not give Shivani any tough choices. The film should have put Shivani in situations where she has to think hard about what is right and wrong.. It does not do that. It just makes her do the old things we expect to see in these kinds of movies. Mukerji does a job, with what she has to work with but even she cannot make the story interesting when it gets too simple in the second half. The story of Shivani gets boring because it does not have any surprises.
The Villain Problem
A Mardaani film is only as good as the guy in it. The Mardaani series has done a job of making villains who are not just bad but also really creepy. In Mardaani 3 the bad guy is introduced in a way that’s interesting. He is mysterious, smart and really calm which is pretty disturbing. The Mardaani series is known for its villains and the villain in Mardaani 3 seems like he will be just as scary as the others, in the Mardaani series.
The early fights between Shivani and the bad guy are really exciting. The conversations between them are short. They mean a lot. It seems like they have different ideas about life and that could have made the movie a big battle of minds. The movie could have been, about Shivani and the bad guy trying to outsmart each other.
The movie starts out with a guy who seems really complicated.. Then the script makes him into a regular bad guy you see in a lot of action movies. What made him interesting at first becomes really simple. He goes from being really scary to something that moves the story along. This change makes the movie less exciting. A good thriller is exciting because you do not know what will happen next. When the bad guy becomes easy to figure out the movie is not suspenseful anymore. The thriller is not great when you can tell what the bad guy will do. A great thriller has a guy like the one in this movie at first but the movie does not keep him that way. The bad guy in this movie becomes predictable. That is not good, for a thriller.
The writers seem to have given up on being subtle and decided to go for something that would get a reaction instead. They stopped trying to be clever and nuanced with the story. That is really what the problem is, with the writers and the way they tell the story of the writers. The writers focused on making things loud and flashy which’s not what the writers should have done the writers should have stayed with what made the story good in the first place, which is the nuance of the writers.
The Second Half Slump
The main problem with Mardaani 3 is that it does not have a flow. Mardaani 3 starts to drag after the part. It gets really slow. It feels like the movie is just going around in circles. Mardaani 3 is not slow, in a way that makes you feel like something is going to happen. It is just slow and boring.
The investigation just goes around in circles. You see the same things happening over and over. It feels like the same scenes are just repeated with a changes. The action scenes are what move the story forward now of the characters and what they want. Some of these action scenes are done well but they do not make you feel anything. You watch what is happening. You do not really care about the investigation or what happens next.
The movie story also has a lot of talking that explains everything. Of showing what is happening through what the characters do and find out they just tell each other what is going on. This does not feel natural. It makes the story feel like it is not real. The screenplay has people talking about the plot all the time.
The tone of the movie that was good, in the half starts to fall apart. The serious parts are ruined by much drama that is not needed. The film does not know what it wants to be. A thriller or a big action movie. The film is trying to be both a thriller and a big action movie but it does not do a good job of being either a real thriller or a big action movie.
Themes That Fade Away
At the beginning of the movie Mardaani 3 seems like it is going to look at some big issues. Mardaani 3 is going to talk about things like power and gender. If the people, in charge are doing their job. These are things that people should think about.. As Mardaani 3 goes on it does not really focus on these things anymore. Mardaani 3 starts to forget about power and gender and institutional accountability.
The movie does not really explore the problems it brings up. It falls back into the story of good people fighting bad people. The movie talks about issues but it does this in a very basic way. It is like a setting, than something that really matters. This is really disappointing especially since the franchise is known for dealing with topics. The franchise is known for confronting realities but the movie does not do this.
The old Mardaani movies were good because they were exciting and they talked about the things in society without looking away. Mardaani 3 tries to do the thing but it does not really go all the way. Mardaani 3 wants to be, like the Mardaani movies but it does not quite get there. The old Mardaani movies were brave. Mardaani 3 is not as brave as they were.
Technical Craft: Strong but Uneven
The film is really well made. The music in the background of the half is very good it makes you feel nervous without being too much. The sound effects are important to make you feel uncomfortable. You can hear sirens away people screaming quietly and footsteps that echo all of these things make the atmosphere feel scary. The sound design and the background score of the film are good, at doing this.
The music gets really overpowering towards the end. It is like the music is trying to tell you how to feel, of just letting you feel it naturally. The music becomes too loud. It is like it is pushing you to be emotional rather than just letting the emotions come out on their own. The music, in the half of the thing is just not subtle at all it is just too much.
The fight scenes, in this movie are really believable. Feel real. They do not have people doing things that nobody can do.. There are so many fight scenes in the last part that they start to feel normal. When everything is exciting all the time then nothing really feels exciting. The action scenes are what make the movie exciting. The action scenes are also what make the movie feel not so exciting when there are too many of them.
The editing of the movie is really good at first. Then it becomes inconsistent. Some scenes go on for long and the transitions between them feel really sudden. This makes the movie feel like it is longer than it really is. The editing is a problem because it makes the movie feel slow. The movie is the film and the film is the movie so the film feels longer, than the movie actually’s.
Supporting Cast: Underutilized Potential
The people who are not the stars do a good job but most characters are not given much to do. Some actors seem like they will be important. Then they are hardly seen again as the story starts to focus on just a few things. The supporting cast, like I said, does a job but the characters are just not that well developed.
The people in the movie are not very interesting. This makes it hard to care about what happens to them. A good thriller needs a lot of characters like friends, people who give information, victims and suspects. These characters make the story more fun to watch. In Mardaani 3 a lot of the supporting characters feel like they are there to move the story along. They do not feel like people. Mardaani 3 needs characters that’re more interesting and relatable. The characters in Mardaani 3 should be like the characters, in a thriller.
The story feels like it is missing something. The result is a narrative that does not feel complete. It is like a book, with not pages. The narrative ecosystem feels thinner than it should.

Franchise Fatigue?
The movie has another problem. It is the burden of expectation. When you get to the part people expect things to get better. They want the problems to get bigger and more complicated, not just bigger. The movie needs to have complexity that is what the audience wants from the film, the third installment of the film.
Mardaani 3 is a movie that makes the crime a lot bigger. It does not make the story more interesting. Just because something is bigger it does not mean it is better. The Mardaani series has always been good because it focuses on what people think and feel and what’s real, in society. When Mardaani 3 starts to follow the old pattern it starts to look like all the other police movies and that is not good. The Mardaani series should stick to what makes it special which is the way it looks at people and society.
This is not a failure of the thing we wanted to do. It is a failure of how we did the thing we wanted to do. We had plans but the execution of those plans the way we carried them out that is what failed. The ambition was good the execution of the ambition was bad.
Emotional Disconnect
The movie has a problem. It does not make you feel anything. The story is about things but it never stops to let the people watching think about how the violence affects the people in the story. The film is about stuff but the people who made it did not do a good job of making the audience feel the human cost of violence, like what happens to the people in the film when they experience violence.
The people who are victims, in these stories are not really seen as people. They are things that make the plot happen. What happens to them is what makes the detectives start looking into things.. When you see what happens to the victims it does not feel as sad as it should. The other movies did a job of showing how sad the bad things that happened were. In this one the story moves fast from one bad thing to the next. Because of this you do not really feel bad for the victims of these things. The victims are what make the detectives do their job. The story does not make you feel bad for the victims.
When you do not have feelings tied to a story the suspense is not scary. It is, like something’s missing. Without grounding suspense just does not feel the same. Suspense becomes hollow. It is not interesting anymore.
The ending is really good. It takes a long time to get there. A strong climax is what this story has. A strong climax that arrives too late is still a problem. The climax is the part it is a strong climax but it comes after a lot of waiting. This strong climax is exciting. It would be better if it did not take so long to arrive.
The movie gets back on track at the end. The last part is really good and full of energy. The final confrontation is well done and the actors do a great job. Rani Mukerji is amazing, in the part and she shows us why the Rani Mukerji movies are so good when they are good.
The story is already hurt by this point. A good ending does not make up for the parts in the middle. The exciting conclusion feels like a part of the movie that is good but the rest of the movie is not as good as it could be. The end of the story feels like a time when the movie gets better but the rest of the movie is uneven. The climax of the movie is what people look forward to. In this case the climax of the story feels like a brief return, to form the movie is The Movie and The Movie has an uneven journey The Movie has a climax that is exciting but The Movie is not that great because of the boring middle of The Movie.
Final Verdict
Mardaani 3 is not a movie. The people who made Mardaani 3 did a job. The main actress in Mardaani 3 is really great. There are some good parts in Mardaani 3. The first half of Mardaani 3 is very good. It reminds me of how exciting the Mardaani series can be when it is, at its best.
The movie has some problems. It does not stay good all the way through. The second part of the film is not as interesting as the part. It stops being about the characters and their thoughts and feelings. It becomes just a regular action movie. The bad guy in the movie is also not as complicated as he was at first. The film forgets about the ideas it was trying to say. The movie starts out really strong but it ends up being, like every thriller movie it is just too familiar. The thriller movie starts with authority but the thriller movie ends with familiarity the thriller movie loses its edge.
Rani Mukerji really works hard to make the movie good. She does a job and for a lot of people her acting is the only reason to watch the film.. The story is not as good as Rani Mukerjis acting. The people who wrote the script did not do good a job as Rani Mukerji did with her performance. Rani Mukerjis performance is very intense. The script is just not, at the same level.
Mardaani 3 had everything it needed to be a next part of a series that people love.. It is just okay when it should have been really good. Mardaani 3 is fun to watch. It gets your attention sometimes but it never really lives up to what it shows you in the beginning.
For fans of the franchise, the film offers moments of satisfaction. For others, it may feel like a missed opportunity — a reminder that even strong characters need equally strong storytelling to truly soar.
