Rain to continue in Kerala till Thursday, Orange alert in 8 district, yellow in 6,holiday declared for Education institutions.

A reinvigorated monsoon lashed across the State on Wednesday with parts of north and central Kerala and hilly areas experiencing heavy rain, bringing normal life to a halt in many places.

With Southwest monsoon intensifying in Kerala two days after its onset, heavy downpours lashed several parts of the state, especially in south and central districts triggering landslides, uprooting trees and waterlogging.

Continuous rains for hours caused widespread destruction in the high-range areas of Kottayam and Idukki districts, while intense rains caused severe waterlogging and traffic snarls in the low-lying areas of Thrissur district.

State Revenue Minister K Rajan had earlier in the day informed the public that parts of the state had received over 200 mm of rain in the last 24 hours.

Rajan, who met the media today, said parts of Kerala received over 20 cm of rain in the last 24 hours and added that a total of 11 people has lost their lives in the state in various recent rain-related incidents.

An orange alert, on the other hand, indicates very heavy rain ranging from 11 cm to 20 cm, while a yellow alert signifies heavy rainfall between 6 cm and 11 cm.

Heavy rains have caused severe waterlogging in Kerala, affecting cities like Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, and Thrissur.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for nine districts, signaling very heavy rainfall.

The Delayed flights from Kozhikode International Airport, and flooding at Kochi’s KSRTC bus stand and major roads have caused heavy traffic disruptions. Meanwhile, NDRF Director-General SN Pradhan announced that 11 teams will deploy in south and central Kerala for rescue and relief operations. NDRF will deploy one team in each of Malappuram, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Pathanamthitta, Palakkad, Kottayam, Kannur, and Kollam, while stationing two teams in Idukki.

A red alert indicates heavy to extremely heavy rain of over 20 cm in 24 hours. Authorities have issued an orange alert for Sunday in Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, and Kasaragod districts.

The IMD has has also issued an orange alert in Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod districts for Monday. An orange alert means very heavy rain of 11 cm to 20 cm, and a yellow alert means heavy rainfall between 6 cm and 11 cm.

The weather office has predicted heavy rain for Rajasthan, Bihar, Uttarakhand, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, and Haryana until June 29. The weather forecast predicts heavy rain today, June 28, and on June 29 in Jharkhand, Punjab, and Uttarakhand.

Holiday declared for education institutions in Kerala.

Authorities have declared a holiday for all educational institutions. According to IMD, a trough at mean sea level runs off the Maharashtra and Kerala coasts, and a cyclonic circulation lies over central Gujarat.

The meteorological department has issued heavy rainfall warnings in color codes (Green/Yellow/Orange/Red) for district-wise distribution to SDMA, district collectors, police, railways, and other relevant authorities. The expectation of rainfall amounts exceeding 7 cm in 24 hours has prompted disaster management machinery to prepare for potential impacts.
