Heavy rain lashed Haridwar on Saturday afternoon and several cars washed away after flooding in the Sukhi river here.Vehicles Float in Haridwar

Rainwater gushed into homes and left major roads in the pilgrimage town waterlogged.

As the rainfed Sukhi river is generally dry, people habitually park their cars on the dry riverbed.
As the river got flooded all of a sudden, the cars were swept away in the swirling waters. The river joins the mainstream of the Ganga a short distance away.

The Uttarakhand Police also took to X and said that vehicles parked near the dry river in Kharkhari instead of allotted parking areas, started flowing into the river due to heavy rains.

“There has been no loss of life in the incident. Please park your vehicles in the designated parking places only,” the police said.

UTTARAKHAND WEATHER NEWS

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for the state from June 30 to July 3. “Isolated very heavy rainfall likely over Uttarakhand during June 30 and July 3,” the weather department’s bulletin said.

WEATHER IN OTHER REGIONS

The weather office said that a low pressure area is currently situated over the northwest Bay of Bengal, adjoining the north Odisha-Gangetic West Bengal coasts, adding that the cyclonic circumstances have formed over northeast Rajasthan, east Uttar Pradesh bordering Bihar and northwest Uttar Pradesh at lower tropospheric levels.

Chhattisgarh, Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, and Odisha will likely receive heavy rainfall on June 29-30, and Bihar from June 30 to July 2.

Conditions are likely to become favourable for further advance of southwest Monsoon into some more parts of Rajasthan; remaining parts of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, some more parts of Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Chandigarh and some parts of Haryana, some more parts of Punjab, remaining parts of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu during next two-three days, the IMD said.Vehicles Float in Haridwar

Earlier on June 27, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that the conditions favouring further advance of southwest monsoon into some more parts of North India are being witnessed as the heatwave conditions have abated across the country.

Meanwhile, police made an announcement urging people to stay away from the water and the edge of the river as the flow of water could increase anytime.

Uttrakhand spokesman Amit Chandola said the rescue operation centered on evacuating nearly 27,000 people trapped in the worst-hit Kedarnath temple area — one of the holiest Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Shiva, located atop the Garhwal Himalayan range. The temple escaped major damage, but debris covered the area around it and television images showed the bodies of pilgrims strewn around the area.

Soldiers and other workers reopened dozens of roads by building makeshift bridges, accelerating the evacuation, Chandola said. More than 2,000 vehicles carrying stranded Hindu pilgrims have moved out of the area since late Thursday, he said.

Thousands of soldiers continued efforts to reach the worst-hit towns and villages, Chandola said.Vehicles Float in Haridwar
